FAQ

What are your fair trade practices and how do you give back to the artisans you work with and the people of Bali, Indonesia?
We pay fair and consistent wages for all goods and reinvest into our artisans' small businesses as needs arise. Sustainable income is our goal and the desire for our partners. Through sustainable income, our artisans can plan ahead, providing better opportunities for their children through higher education and savings for the future.

We embrace artisan culture. Balinese artisan culture works in collectives of people, usually entire villages, who share the same traditional skills. Artisans work from the safety and comfort of their homes and villages and are paid per finished good, not hourly, which provides a flexible and reasonable work schedule.
We provide skills training to those in need. We partner with the Women's Workshop to provide skills training for single mothers and free schooling for their children. This program by the Bali Life Foundation is purposed to keep children and mothers off the streets, out of compromising situations, and give them skills, provision and opportunity for a better future. Our macrame goods are made by these women where they earn a daily wage in a safe, successful environment.
We meet needs when they arise. When we heard about one of our artisans needing cataract surgery, we decided to partner with the John Fawcett Foundation to bring sight not only to Made but her entire village. We continue our giving to this foundation with the sale of every Opened Eyes Rattan Mirror.
We aim to provide opportunities for the people of Bali while also creating beautiful products that can be enjoyed in your home and each tell a story of craft and culture. Every purchase helps a village thrive.

Will my product look exactly like the photo?

Each piece is handmade, and therefore distinctly unique. While the shape and style will, of course, be the same, no two bags will ever be exactly identical in color and weave pattern. Which means — your product is truly your own.

I heard the bags have a slightly smokey smell to them, why is that?

Each bag is woven by hand and then smoked, which strengthens the rattan and gives it the beautiful natural color you see. The bags are then dried out in the sun for several days to let the smoke dissipate. We air them out again in Oregon at our headquarters, there may still be a residual smoke scent when you receive your bag. We love and embrace the smokiness — it reminds us that this is a natural product made by real people with real materials. The scent will dissipate over time, but if you want to speed up the process, open the bag in an area where it is likely to catch a breeze for a few days!

What can I do about stray pieces of rattan on my bag?

This may happen and it’s completely normal! If a piece of stray rattan juts out from the weave, it’s easily fixed with a pair of nail trimmers. Simply clip down the excess! Due to this happening occasionally, we recommend not wearing silk or materials that easily snag with the bags.
